The MacDonalds were on the Scottish Crown side during the Wars of Scottish Independence but frequently fought with the royal authority because they were ambitious. Its greatest strength was during the 15th century under the Lords of the Isles, but their authority was lost after 1493 when the title was lost. The MacDonalds were Jacobites in the 17th century and their power faded away following the defeat at Culloden in 1746. The clan is now remembered in the form of cultural celebrations and genealogical studies.
