The name of Clan Urquhart is derived from the lands of Urquhart on the west bank of Loch Ness. The first known Sheriff of Cromarty was William de Urchard in the 13th century, who was followed by Adam Urquhart, who was granted the Sheriffdom of Cromarty by King David II in 1358. Today the chief of the Urquhart clan lives in America.
