Forsyth Modern Tartan Kilt
Sale price $209.00 USD

The Forsyth Tartan has one of the most well documented and historically interesting origins of any clan tartan; a history that links directly to one of the most famous military regiments to emerge from Scotland in the 18th century and can be traced through some of the most respected sources in Scottish heraldic tradition.

In 1794 the designer commissioned to create the design for a particular and prestigious military purpose was a talented and skilled tailor from Huntly, Aberdeenshire, William Forsyth. It was commissioned by the Duchess of Gordon who was one of the most famous and influential women of late 18th century Scottish society who tasked William Forsyth with creating the design for the 75th Gordon Highlanders regiment - one of the most prestigious Scottish Highland regiments of the British Army.

The Forsyth Tartan's military heritage is unusual and rich in history, as it does not only come from the Scottish clan, but also from the proud military heritage of the Highlands which produced some of the most renowned regiments in British history. The Forsyth Tartan also gives a nod to a military heritage because of the association with the Gordon Highlanders, a regiment of great distinction, great battlefield honour.

In 1795, the tartan was registered formally, only one year after the original design commission, and is one of the earliest Scottish clan tartans to have been formally registered. This early registration makes the Forsyth Tartan one of the most extensively documented of the clan tartans in the Scottish tradition and the existence of the registration of clan tartans as a systematic practice within Scottish textile culture is only just beginning to be recognised and documented during this period.
