Douglas Ancient Tartan Kilt
The History of Clan Douglas
A name, deeds and legacy that span centuries of political turmoil, military success and cultural achievement, Clan Douglas is one of Scotland's most powerful and celebrated noble families in the history of the nation.
The Douglas clan was a clan of Scottish lowlanders who first appear in historical records in the 12th century, and who could be found in Lanarkshire, a part of the Scottish lowlands, before occupying huge tracts of land in southern and central Scotland. The Douglases rose to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful noble families in medieval Scotland through a remarkable combination of military strength, political alliances and royal favour – sometimes rivaling the Scottish crown in wealth, land holdings and political influence.
The clan gave birth to some of the most renowned personalities of Scotland. Sir James Douglas, "The Good Sir James" as he was known throughout Scotland and beyond, was closest friend, most trusted military commander and most loyal supporter of Scotland's greatest warrior king, Robert the Bruce. Sir James was one of the most daring and popular military commanders of the Wars of Scottish Independence and was a legend for his courage, tactical brilliance and unwavering loyalty to the Scottish cause, which made him one of the most popular figures of his time in all of Europe.
After the death of Robert the Bruce in 1329, Sir James was commissioned with the solemn and extraordinary task of bringing the Bruce's embalmed heart to the Holy Land, as per the king's last wishes, and was to meet his own heroic death in battle against the Moors in Spain. The Douglas heart, which appears on the clan's coat of arms to this day, is one of the most potent and moving symbols in the entire body of Scottish clan heraldry, and a lasting tribute to the exceptional bond between Scotland's two greatest medieval heroes.
The following history of the Douglas family was no less exciting. The two great branches of the clan, the Black Douglases and the Red Douglases, together controlled the politics and military affairs of Scotland during much of the 14th and 15th centuries, gaining earldoms, lordships and lands to make them more powerful than any other noble house in Scotland except the royal family. One of the most remarkable incidents in Scottish medieval history is the eventual fall of the Black Douglas to King James II who personally stabbed the 8th Earl of Douglas at Stirling Castle in 1452.
