Stewart of Atholl Modern Tartan Kilt
The Stewart of Atholl tartan, fashioned by Sobieski Stuarts, play a sacred role in the Scottish tradition, the history interwoven with the very body of the sett.
Initially designed as the Vestiarium Scoticum commission, this clan tartan was later printed in a book by D.W. Stewart in 1893, entitled Old and Rare Scottish Tartans, which established the connection with the legendary relic of the 45th Jacobite Rising. The Stewart of Atholl is not nearly the same as its Lindsay opposite but there is a slight, though powerful difference, in that the bright blue ground, crossed in red, is carried through to deep, mysterious black, giving the tartan a charm of mystique and historical authenticity. Being one of the oldest and the longest-running clan tartans in Scotland, this pattern is used not only to honor the legendary past of the Stuarts, but also to commemorate the rich cultural heritage, which has influenced the country throughout centuries.
