MacQuarrie Ancient Tartan Kilt
Historical Significance
MacQuarrie clan is a Highland clan as one of the seven clans of Siol Alpin, which is said to be a descendant of King of the ancient land of Dál Riata. MacGuaidhre is their Gaelic name which translates to proud or noble. They are among the four most ancient in Scottish history and have a similar lineage with the Mackinnons, Guaire being the brother of Fingon, their ancestor. The MacQuarries engaged in the Scottish Wars of Independence, and took sides with Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. They are strong supporters of Scottish independence.
The abolition of the Lordship of the Isles caused the Macquarries to be still more independent, though they generally allied themselves with the fortunes of their more influential neighbours, the Macleans of Duart. In 1545 the last Lord of the Isles, Donald, had been assisted by John Macquarrie of Ulva in his plan against the Crown, but he was among the chiefs denounced in the same year, on account of his traitorous negotiations with the English. The MacQuarrie clan motto is Turris Fortis Meus Mihi Deus (God is a strong tower to me) and the badge of the clan is a pine. The crest of the clan is a dagger held by an armoured arm coming out of a tower.
The island of Ulva, in the west of the edge of Mull, was owned by the MacQuarries, and is also a branch of the Clan Alpin, descended, with the MacGregors, MacKinnons, and MacPhies, of Kenneth MacAlpine, the first king of Scotland.
