The Gaelic Aonghais is the source of the name Clan MacInnes, which is shared by the MacGillivrays and has a rich Celtic heritage in Scotland. In 1390, when their chief was killed, the clan was split up, some taking refuge with the famous Clan Campbell; others gaining long-term fame as hereditary Bowmen to the MacKinnons of Skye.
Their spirit of warriors did not wain. During the Jacobite Rising of 1745, MacInnes men once again came out to the call of Stewart of Ardsheal and joined one of the most important battles in Scottish history.
