Gilchrist, a descendant of the Celtic Earls of Lennox was the ancestor of this clan. In 1230 they owned Arrochar and their territory was on Loch Lomondside. Their 4th Chief was called Bartholomew or Parlan in Gaelic; MacFarlane is a clan name signifying son of Bartholomew. They were robust and belligerent and were outstanding in fighting.
