It is one of the oldest surnames in Scotland and the clan is believed to have been an offspring of the Celtic Earls of Fife. Within an Act of 1384 comes the reference to the Law Clan Duff wherein they were allowed some privileges. The direct line of the Celtic Earls ended in 1353.
