MacDonald of Clanranald Modern Tartan Kilt
The MacDonald of Clanranald Modern Heavyweight Tartan is a classic blue and green with prominent red and white overchecks. This famous branch of Clan Donald originated with Ranald, son of the Lord of the Isles, and established a formidable reputation as a warlike, turbulent and storied people. They were known for their skills in clan warfare, and in 1544 they helped Clan Fraser to be soundly defeated in the Battle of Blar-na-leine. They were loyal throughout and served Montrose in his campaigns of the 17th century and took an active part both in the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745. In September 1745, Prince Charlie's famous standard was raised in the Glenfinnan area of Clanranald territory, a pivotal moment in the clan's history. Castle Tirim, their ancient fortress, is a legacy of the Clanranald.
