The Clans of Clanranald was established by Ranald, son of the Lord of the Isles, who became a renowned warrior and made for the Clan a strong reputation for the prowess of his warriors. Their history is one of constant battle and unyielding courage — from bitter clan feuds to the great conflicts that shaped Scotland's destiny.
They had captured the Highland stronghold of Ross in 1544, and at the Battle of Blar-na-leine in 1544 they had a decisive victory over the Clan Fraser, one of many victories that ensured their supremacy in the Highlands. They joined Montrose in the 17th century campaign and responded to the call in both the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745.
In Sept. 1745, the standard of Prince Charlie was raised at Glenfinnan, on the land of the Clanranald, a defining moment in Scottish history which was played out in the very heart of the land of the Clanranald. The castle Tioram is still standing, a testament to their strength and legacy.
