The clan can be traced back to Somerled the legendary King of the Isles of Norse-Galic descent and the name of the clan comes from Domhnall Mac Raghnuill, one of the great nobles of the 13th century. The chiefs of the clan were the Lords of the Isles, and enjoyed great authority over the western Highlands & Islands up until 1493, reflecting the power, influence and pride of the clan in Scottish history.
