The origin of this tartan is in Donald, the grandson of Somerled of the Isles, and the oldest and most widely known of all Scottish Clans. The Lords of the Isles were powerful in extensive territories and reigned like autonomous rulers. They assisted Bruce in his Independence, but their right to the Earldom of Ross led them into an opposition with the Crown.
