The clan Leslie have been in control of the Barony of Leslie in Aberdeenshire since the 12th century. Sir Andrew Leslie became Earl of Rothes by King James II of Scotland, and was one of the signatories to the letter of 1329 asserting the independence of Scotland, which was signed by a number of Scottish lords.
