The Keith clan is one of the oldest and most influential settings in Scotland with its origins that can be traced to the northeastern region of the country especially in Aberdeenshire. The rise of the family started with Hervey de Keith who was born Marischal of Scotland in the 12th century, a title that was hereditary, meaning it would no longer depend on the wishes of the Scottish Crown. The Keiths were prominent figures both in the military and political arena of Scotland, most notably their involvement in the Wars of Scottish Independence.
