Irvine Weathered Tartan, Timeworn Hues of Clan Irvine
The Irvine Weathered Tartan has a long and rich history which traces back to the 12th century when Irvine Clan was formed. It is suggested that Irvine was given its name due to the Brythonic word of ir-afon, meaning green water. The clan has its origins in Dumfriesshire, and is traditionally associated with ancient Celtic kings. William de Irwin was granted this historic stronghold of Drum Castle in Aberdeenshire in 1325 by Robert the Bruce as a reward on account of his faithful service. Irvines were central to the history of Scotland, especially in the 18th century, with a vote in the favour of the Jacobites. Irrespective of the numerous issues, the Irvine Clan continues to exist through its tartan and anyone who identifies with the Scottish ancestry will be proud. The family was able to keep Drum Castle until 1975 when it was bequeathed to the National Trust of Scotland.
