Historical Significance

The Inverness Ancient Tartan is well-known district tartan which does not have an official Clan Chief. Its history can be traced back to 1822 when His Royal Duke of Sussex was believed to have invented it, in his capacity as the Earl of Inverness. This tartan was the name of a Scottish title of the Duke, and is peculiarly historic because it was the first tartan so illustrated in color in a book on tartans. Interestingly, the royal family has also used this tartan with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II; at a young age.
