Gordon is named after the Gaelic 'gor-dun' which means spacious fortification an early stronghold of the family, perhaps in the Berwickshire's. Richard of Gordon was the earliest documented Gordon, who existed in the late 12th century, during the reign of King William the Lion. The clan played a large role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and in 1320, Sir Adam de Gordon was one of the signatories to the Declaration of Arbroath. The Gordons were a strong group throughout the 16th century, which influenced political and cultural life in Scotland. This further established the significance of this clan in the history of Scotland when Alexander Gordon was granted the Earl ship of Huntly in 1449.
