Forsyth Ancient Tartan Kilt
Clan Forsyth is a noble clan of Scotland that has maintained their name and identity with honour through the generations and have spread across Scotland's history. The Forsyth name is thought to have originated in Gaelic "Fearsithe" (man of peace), and is of very ancient origin, linked to the earliest recorded usage of the Scottish Gaelic language and to Highland tradition in Scotland. Over the course of the medieval and early modern era, the Forsyths came to be a credible figure in many parts of Scotland, developing a sense of being a clan people through loyalty, service and enduring Scottish family pride.
Today, the clan is represented by the Alistair Forsyth of that Ilk, the recognised Chief of Clan Forsyth, who has been recognised as Chief of the Clan by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, Scotland's supreme heraldic authority. There have also been scientists of outstanding scientific achievement among the Forsyths.
The Reverend Alexander John Forsyth, of Belhelvie in Aberdeenshire, was a member of the Forsyth family and invented the percussion cap in the early 19th century, a game-changer in the world of guns and bullets that has secured his lasting place in the annals of scientific achievement. Named in honour of William Forsyth, renowned Scottish botanist, superintendent of the Royal Gardens at Kensington and St James's Palace in the late 18th century, the forsythia plant is one of the more widely recognised flowering shrubs in gardens around the world.
