Clan Duncan is a proud and ancient Scottish clan whose name is steeped in history and a part of the story of Scotland. The Scottish Gaelic name Duncan comes from Donnchadh which means brown warrior or dark warrior; a very ancient name that links the Duncan family to the earliest period of Scottish Gaelic culture and Highland clan identity.Perhaps most notably, the Duncan name is associated with King Duncan I of Scotland, who was murdered by Macbeth in 1040, and was the subject of one of the most famous works in all of English literature, the play Macbeth.

Though Shakespeare's portrayal of King Duncan in Macbeth is highly dramatised, King Duncan I was a real Scottish monarch and his reign and the ensuing battle against Macbeth were a pivotal and truly dramatic period in the earliest Scottish historical record. In addition to this royal affiliation, the Duncan family became a powerful and prominent family in various parts of Scotland throughout the medieval and early modern eras.

The most famous branch of the clan was the Duncans of Lundie in Perthshire, who were particularly distinguished in the 18th century, with Admiral Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan, one of the most famous British naval commanders, rising to fame for a decisive victory over the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797, a triumph that made him a Viscount and the enduring gratitude of the British nation.
