The Sobieski Stewarts' family tartan is listed in the remarkable collection of clan and family tartans compiled and published by John Sobieski Stolberg Stuart and Charles Edward Stuart's Vestiarium Scoticum, a seminal collection of Scottish tartan patterns based on 17th century and earlier historical records.
One of the most discussed, debated and historically important publications in the history of Scottish tartan culture is the Vestiarium Scoticum, published in 1842. Their claims have been a subject of scholarly debate for more than 180 years, but the Tartans which they published, including the Dunbar, have survived as true and legitimate clan tartans worn with pride by members and descendants of the Clan Stuart around the world.
