Douglas is named after the Gaelic words, dubh glas, meaning black water, that indicates that the clan is linked to the natural scenery of Scotland. The clan has its roots in the early 12th century when Theobald le Fleming was awarded the Douglas estate in Lanarkshire by the Abbey of Kelso. His son was the first Lord of Douglas and that is where the family of Douglas started which has shaped the Scottish history with great names like Sir James Douglas, a good friend of Robert the Bruce.
