The History of Clan Cunningham

One of Scotland's oldest and most distinguished noble families, Clan Cunningham's history is well documented and proud, reaching back to the historic county of Ayrshire, on the southwest coast, in the 12th century. The name comes from the district of Cunningham in Ayrshire, which was a rich and important area of land, and was the homes of the Cunningham family throughout Scottish history.

During the medieval era the Cunningham's became very prominent in Scottish political and military affairs, gaining a large amount of land in Ayrshire and beyond, as a result of royal favor, strategic marriage and superior military service to the Scottish crown. The Earldom of Glencairn was the most important of the clan's titles and placed the Cunninghams at the pinnacle of the Scottish aristocracy in the 15th and 16th centuries, in the south west of Scotland. The Cunningham clan motto, Over Fork Over, is one of the most unique and controversial clan mottoes in Scotland and the exact meaning and origin of the motto remains a topic for discussion by Scottish historians and clan experts.

The imagery of the clan crest is that of a shaking hand holding a sheath, which symbolizes the many inter- and intra-clan alliances, loyalties and entanglements that shaped Highland and Lowland Scotland throughout the medieval era.

Throughout the Reformation period and after, Clan Cunningham was active in Scottish national life, especially the Earls of Glencairn, who were prominent in the religious and political turmoil of the 16th and 17th centuries that transformed Scotland. The 9th Earl of Glencairn was a close friend and patron of Scotland's national poet Robert Burns, putting Clan Cunningham at the center of Scotland's greatest literary heritage, and further enriching an already remarkable story of a clan.
