Colquhoun Modern Tartan Kilt
Clan Colquhoun, pronounced “Ca-hoon” in the traditional Scottish way, is one of Scotland's oldest and most esteemed Highland families and its origins date back to the 13th century in the beautiful hills of Loch Lomondside, in Dunbartonshire. The Barony of Colquhoun in Dunbartonshire became the Barony of the clan, when Humphrey of Kilpatrick was granted it by the Earl of Lennox in the early 13th century.
For more than 700 years, the Colquhouns have been an important family in the Highland life of Scotland, living in the seat of Rossdhu House, on the shores of Loch Lomond, one of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes and a place that has influenced the life and character of the clan over the years. Cnoc Ealachain is the clan's motto; it is their gathering place and rally point and symbolizes the strong geographical connection that tied Highland clans to their ancestral lands.
The Clan Colquhoun is best known historically as the protagonists of the Battle of Glen Fruin in 1603, which was a major clan feud with the MacGregors, and was a decisive defeat for the Colquhouns which led to the proscription of the MacGregor name by King James VI.
