The Burns Check Tartan: A Poetic Tribute to Scotland’s Bard

At Expo Tartan, we have the privilege of showcasing the Burns Check Tartan which is a symbolic representation of the Scottish culture and a respectful tribute to the greatest poet of Scotland, Robert Burns. Putting on this tartan is not a fashion statement; it is the linkage to a rich heritage that has motivated generations all over the world.

The Birth of Burns Check Tartan

The Burns Check Tartan was developed out of deliberate contemplation. Although it was initially proposed that the design be based on the Campbell clan tartan- as a result of the historical connection of the Burns family- it was decided that it would be more appropriate to have a design which would represent the simple and rural origins of the poet.

The outcome was a pattern that was designed after the traditional Shepherd Check. The simplicity and elegance that are the focus of the life and work of Burns are reflected in this design. In order to further base the tartan on the identity of the poet, the design group used:

Hodden Grey: A Scottish traditional color that symbolizes the everyday, laborious cloth that the Scottish folk wore.

Green: The slight shade of green was incorporated in to signify the natural fields and landscapes of Scotland where Burns got the main influence in his poetry.

Official Recognition: Burns Federation

The design of the Burns Check Tartan was officially accepted by the Burns Federation in June 1959. In order to ensure the integrity of this tribute, the Federation made a special provision: all Burns Tartan products should be produced in Scotland. This promise also makes sure that all the apparel is a tribute to the great textile heritage of Scotland and that it is true to the heritage it is celebrating.

A Global Legacy

The Burns Check Tartan is still a breathing symbol of the mission of the Burns Federation to maintain the life and work of the Scottish Bard. The spirit of Robert Burns is still alive through the world singing his poem of Auld Lang Syne at the end of the year on New Year Eve to the millions of people who visit his birthplace in Ayrshire.

In wearing the Burns Check Tartan, you are bringing a part of the past into the present that glorifies simplicity, nature and the power of the human spirit.
