The Bisset Ancient Tartan is the most mysterious representative of the history of the Bisset clan, which has origins in Norman. The Bissets have a French name, Bissette, meaning small beard, and began as an important family in Normandy, and then travelled to Scotland in the 12th century. The early Scottish history of the Bissets is mainly lost in mystery, and not much is known of their condition in the middle ages, though they settled in the north about the end of the seventh century, at what is now called Inverness and Ross. It has been theorized that historically the Bissets were the vassals of the powerful Comyn family, the earls of Buchan, but they might have had autonomous lands and status as well. The Bisset tartan has stripes of black, green, yellow, white, pale carmine, and blue that are rich in symbolism of all the ties of the clan to the history and geography of the Scottish people.
