Clan Anderson is a legitimate Scottish clan, having been recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, Scotland's highest heraldic office, as one of the legitimate armigerous clans of Scotland. The name Anderson is Scottish and is literally "Son of Andrew": Saint Andrew, Scotland's beloved patron saint, is one of the most symbolically Scottish names in Highland tradition.

Anderson surname is one of the most widespread in Scotland and has been historically connected with many of the Scottish Clan associations such as Mackintosh, Chattan and Ross. The Clan Anderson is not currently represented by a chief recognised by the Court of the Lord Lyon, but Clan Anderson has an active and proud clan identity with Clan Anderson Society, founded in 1973, operating throughout North America and having a physical presence at the Clan House in Wyseby House, Kirtlebridge, Dumfriesshire.

The Anderson Tartan originated in the historic heartland of the Anderson family, which is the northeast part of Scotland - in Aberdeenshire. Although the Badenoch area has been suggested as the birthplace of the clan, the extensive historical research shows that Aberdeenshire was the geographical and cultural heart of the clan life of the Anderson clan from the earliest times, from the 15th century onwards. This was where the Anderson clan became famous – their identity, reputation and standing in clan history were shaped in the rolling landscapes and ancient communities of north-east Scotland. To express that heritage, the Anderson Tartan was established, so that members of the Anderson family all over the world could wear something that would give them a real and tangible link to their home in Aberdeenshire and their Scottish heritage.

The Anderson Tartan's colour and pattern reflects the rich and balanced colours of the landscape and traditions of Aberdeenshire, as well as the wider Scottish Highland tradition.

Green — Showing the rich farmlands of Aberdeenshire, the ancestral home of the Andersons for many generations, throughout Scottish history.

Sky Blue — Loyalty, steadfastness and the clan's long-standing association with Scotland and the Scottish national identity and heritage of Saint Andrew.

Red — Symbol of the bravery and determination of men/women in the Anderson family throughout the history of the Scots.

Black — Symbolic of the strength and determination that made the Anderson family one of the leading families in the north east of Scotland.

White Overcheck — Increases contrast in the pattern and highlights the deeper shades, adding a pure, clear and refined appearance to the tartan.
