Designed by Brian Wilton in 1973, the Abel Tartan is a more recent creation and is attributed to the Abel family who hail from the Scottish Borders. The Abels were well known for their active part in the major political and social affairs in the region, and in the Scottish wars of independence were conspicuous for their gallantry in the field.
